"The sixth dragon is cold without shelter." The wall answers with Polylepis, forests that climb where trees should fail.

Andes 14: Polylepis High-Forest Frontiers and Ecological Protection on the Wall

Ancient Peru Research

A striking Andes fact is that Polylepis woodlands occur among the highest forests in the world, often near or above conventional treelines. These patchy forests protect soils, water cycles, and unique bird communities under extreme mountain climates.

For ancient highland societies, these margins were functional ecologies, not empty edges. Pre-Inka and Inka adaptation depended on using many ecological bands, and high-elevation woodland patches were part of wider resilience systems.
